La circulation du livre dans une île « semi-ouverte »: le cas de la Corse aux XVIIe-XVIIIe s.

De nombreux préjugés ont façonné l’histoire culturelle de la Corse; parmi les plus structurants, celui arguant un retard culturel au vu notamment de l’installation tardive d’une imprimerie en 1752 puis, plus solidement, à partir de 1760. Grâce à un corpus de sources inédites, cet article vise, au contraire, à expliciter les particularités du milieu culturel local en les réinscrivant dans les dynamiques sociales et politiques, tout autant que dans celles de l’espace ligure. Toutefois, questionner la présence du livre ne revient pas seulement à interroger la pratique sociale de l’accumulation de l’objet-livre mais aussi, et peut-être surtout, de réfléchir quant à l’inscription d’une île « semi-ouverte » dans les réseaux éditoriaux méditerranéens et européens de l’Époque moderne.

Many prejudices have shaped the cultural history of Corsica; among the most influential is the claim of cultural backwardness, particularly due to the late establishment of a printing press in 1752, and more firmly from 1760 onwards. However, based on a corpus of unpublished sources, this article aims to explain the particularities of the local cultural environment by reintegrating them into social and political dynamics, as well as those of the Ligurian region. Nonetheless, questioning the presence of books not only involves examining the social practice of storing books as objects, but also, and perhaps more importantly, reflecting upon how a ‘semi-open’ island was integrated into Mediterranean and European editorial networks during the Early Modern period.
